Today we are exploring one of the most culturally interesting cities in Asia. First, we visit the well-known Independence Monument, then the noteworthy Wat Phnom Temple (admission included) and the National Museum (admission included). It houses exceptional pieces of Khmer art and Khmer craftsmanship. After that, we discover the impressive Royal Palace with the world-famous Silver Pagoda (admission included). There we admire several Buddhas adorned with gemstones. Then we explore the Tuol Sleng Museum (admission included), where we learn about the history of Cambodia. To conclude, we see and smell Asian delicacies at the vibrant Tuol Tumpoung Market. Today we are heading towards Battambang. On the way, we visit Cambodia‘s most famous silversmiths by the picturesque Tonle-Sap-Lake. Afterwards, we continue on to Phnom Oudong. On its hill, there are numerous Buddhist structures, so-called stupas. Then we stop at the fishing village of Kampong Chhnang with its typical floating houses. The journey continues through typical rice fields. After a short stop in the little village of Pursat, we arrive in Battambang in the afternoon. In the evening, you have the option of a fantastic trip to the caves of Phnom Sampov. We will be staying the next two nights comfortably in our lovely 4-star hotel in the Battambang area. After breakfast, we enjoy the beautiful landscapes of Battambang during a leisurely Tuk-Tuk ride. We pass traditional houses and rice fields and stop for a visit at the famous pagodas Wat Balat and Wat Kamphaeng (admissions included). In the afternoon, an optional visit to the Ponleu Selpak lighthouse awaits you. We start our day with a visit to a traditional market, followed by preparing typical Asian Khmer dishes with a local chef. Afterwards, we head to a pagoda, where we witness the daily rituals of the monks and present the dishes we prepared. In exchange, we receive the monks‘ blessings and prayers. Then we travel through Sisophon to Siem Reap. Here, we spend the next two nights in 4-star comfort. We are looking forward to numerous highlights of our journey today. We start with the majestic city of Angkor Thom, a fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Site (admission included). After we have admired the smiling stone statues of the Bayon Temple (admission included), we head to the Baphuon temple mountain and enjoy a wonderful view. Now we stroll over the Elephant Terrace, which was used for royal audiences and public ceremonies. Afterwards, we continue our exploration tour on the so-called ‘Terrace of the Leper King‘ among locals, adorned with Apsara sculptures. The next highlight is the Ta Prohm temple (admission included). This impressive Buddhist temple from the 12ᵗʰ century has already served as a backdrop for numerous Hollywood films. In the afternoon, we visit one of the most famous temples in Asia: Angkor Wat (admission included). This impressive UNESCO World Heritage impresses with its architectural achievement and artistic finesse. Explore Cambodia’s most beautiful city, Siem Reap, on your own today. Admire the well-preserved colonial buildings and stroll through the narrow alleys. Or take advantage of the amenities of your modern 4-star hotel for relaxation. Back on land, we head to Kampong Thom. We make a stop in Kampong Kdei to admire an impressive bridge from the Angkor era. We then continue to the pre-Angkor temples of Sambor Prei Kuk (UNESCO World Heritage, admission included), the former capital of the Chenla Kingdom. We will be staying with 4-star comfort in Kampong Thom. On the morning of the 11ᵗʰ day, we travel back to Phnom Penh. British citizens do need a visa to enter Cambodia for stays of up to 30 days. Passports must be valid for a minimum period of six months from the date of entry into Cambodia and there should be a full blank page for the entry and exit stamps. The visa has a usage period of three months, within which entry can be made. Furthermore, there is the possibility to apply for an E-Visa, the application should be made at least two weeks before the planned start of the trip. The currency is Khemer Riel (KHR). 1 Khmer Riel = 100 Sen. Exchange rate (as at November 2024): 1 GBP = 5.197,12 KHR; 1 KHR = 0,00019 GBP.
Payments are predominantly made in cash in the currencies USD and KHR. It may occur that particularly older or damaged banknotes are not accepted. In addition, there are increasingly counterfeit USD notes in circulation that are deceptively well-faked. Credit cards are generally only accepted in larger hotels and restaurants. The number of ATMs is constantly increasing. Cash withdrawals are usually only possible with credit cards, only a few ATMs accept debit cards (Girocard, with Maestro). Check the authenticity of the USD banknotes received immediately when exchanging money – even at official exchange bureaus.
Private persons travelling can carrying goods – personal items and / or purchases – not intended for commercial purposes, in the amounts permitted by law and whose circulation is not prohibited or restricted. If you are transporting cash or monetary assets in an amount equal to or greater than €10,000 (approx. 8,328 GBP), or an equivalent in a different currency, you must declare it.
Important: If you are travelling to Great Britain from outside the UK, your personal allowances mean you can bring in a certain amount of goods without paying tax or duty. If you go over your allowances you must declare all your goods and pay tax and duty on all the goods in that category. Occasionally, there are minor demonstrations in Cambodia. Avoid demonstrations of any kind. In the tourist centres, particularly in Phnom Penh, there are occasional physical attacks and robberies against foreigners, sometimes involving the use of knives and/or firearms. In tourist centres, especially in guest houses and hotels, thefts are increasingly recorded. A photocopy of the ID can be helpful in case of loss of identification.
The use of drones in Phnom Penh, Angkor Wat and other historical temple complexes is prohibited. The theft of cultural artefacts, including damaged parts of temples and statues, is strictly prohibited and is punishable by severe fines or imprisonment. Cambodia is a constitutional monarchy. The royal house is held in high esteem. Derogatory or critical remarks, even on social media, can be construed as lese majesty and are punishable by fines or imprisonment. Therefore, travellers should be reserved in their comments about the royal family.
At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the latest country specific health advice from the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC – https://travelhealthpro.org.uk/countries) on the Travel HealthPro website. Each country-specific page has information on vaccine recommendations, any current health risks or outbreaks, and factsheets with information on staying healthy abroad. Prior to travelling, seek personal advice from travel health advisory centres, tropical or travel medicine specialists, and adjust your vaccination protection accordingly.
Diarrhoeal Diseases: These can be prevented through appropriate actions. The basic rules are: filter tap water antibacterially or boil it, only consume drinks in their original packaging and use drinking water exclusively for brushing teeth and washing food. Meat should also be well cooked before consumption and not eaten raw.
The medical care in the country is not comparable to Europe and is often technically, apparatus-wise and/or hygienically problematic. Particularly, chronically ill and treatment-needing individuals must be aware of the health risks of travelling to Cambodia. For people treated with anticoagulants, there is a high risk in case of injuries, as there are no antidotes available to stop bleeding.
It is strongly recommended to take out international health insurance with the option of medical repatriation to the UK.
The customer must establish for himself that his physical and mental state is compatible with the selected journey. He is obliged to obtain information about the degrees of physical mobility and mental autonomy required for this journey.
